A full-on day of navigation training commenced at the Moorland Visitor Centre in Edale. After getting to know the different map types, the information they contain, contours and practicing grid co-ordinates, we set off along Edale valley.
Once familiar with the techniques of pacing and timing strategies, it was time to head for the Kinder Scout plateau. The remainder of the day was spent practising compass work. By taking and following compass bearings and combining the skills learnt in the morning, it was possible to visit remote parts of the plateau as well as some of the more familiar points highlighted on the OS maps.
