Rock formations of Higger Tor in the Peak District

It was a crisp February day with hardly a cloud in the sky. Starting from Longshaw estate, we made our way onto Burbage Moor, admiring views across Hethersage Moor and beyond.

At Burbage Bridge we followed Fiddler’s Elbow to Higger Tor, a striking landmark of the Dark Peak gritstone. Making our way down, we stopped to explore the iron age hill fort of Carl Wark. The date and purpose of the construction of the rampart is uncertain, it is unlikely to have been used for continuous occupation, but nonetheless impressive.

We returned along Millstone Edge to ‘Surprise View’ and back through the Longshaw Estate, finishing off a beautiful day with coffee and cake in the estate’s café.
